Nemak announces targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030
Monterrey, Mexico. March 31, 2021. - Nemak, S.A.B. de C.V. ("Nemak") (BMV: NEMAK), a leading provider of innovative lightweighting solutions for the global automotive industry, announced today targets to achieve a 28% reduction of its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2030.
Having completed a rigorous validation process with the Science Based Targets initiative, the Company is now committing to achieve a 28% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG— direct and certain indirect emissions, respectively—by 2030 from a 2019 base year. These targets align with the well-below 2°C pathway drawn from the Paris Agreement that calls for a global commitment to limit the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C, and to strive for just 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Nemak also commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services by 14% over the same timeframe.
"Nemak's purpose centers on driving lightweighting innovation and technology for the advancement of a more sustainable human mobility. We are fully committed to working towards meeting these emissions reduction targets and to reinforcing our ongoing efforts to help reduce the automotive industry's overall environmental impact," said Armando Tamez, CEO of Nemak.
